Syston U17’s v Nuneaton U17’s Midland Plate Final

Result 25 – 5


Syston KO playing into the elements, the first few minutes saw syston enjoying a lot of good possession and field position, but from a missed penalty kick to touch, Nuneaton broke out of their 22 and with some quick hand put the left winger into space who went 60metres to score. The conversion then bounced back off the cross bar. Syston were then put under some pressure and gave away a penalty within kicking distance again fortunately this also just missed.

From this point on Syston settled and midway through the first half, after a good passage of play moving the ball right to left wing James Wheeler put a pass back inside to Tom Collier who duct a tackle to score left of the post. The conversion was missed.
Neither side made any further inroads and at half time the score remained 5 – 5.

From the start of the second half Syston put Nuneaton under pressure and again by good forward control and backs handling opened up Nuneaton on the left for Collier to score his second try to the corner. This time David Torr converted from the touch line 12 – 5 Syston. Minutes later Syston through strong forward surges gave quick ball to the backs who move the ball with slick hands to Luke Welch on the left wing who ran in more or less unopposed to score, conversion was missed. 17 – 5.

Nuneaton were not going to be beaten without a fight and the next 10mins saw them pressurise Syston’s line but good committed defence kept Nuneaton out, and from a 5m lineout Syston moved down the pitch to once again move the ball right to left for Welch to run in his second and Syston’s 4th try.

The final score came from a penalty kick again by David Torr, final score 25 – 5. Syston now go on the play Wirral the Northern Plate Champions, in the National Plate Semi Final on the 20th April at a venue to be agreed. But before that they take on Hinckley U17’s in the Leicestershire County Cup Final at Market Harborough on Sun 13th April KO 15.30.
